Every banking number worth using survives four layers of scrutiny. First, the definition: does "loan growth" mean gross loans, net loans after allowances, or loans held for investment. Second, the source: is the figure drawn from regulatory filings, a bank's own investor deck, or a borrower survey. Third, the method: was it measured against a prior quarter, a prior year, or a seasonally adjusted baseline. Fourth, the decision: what action depends on this number being right. A figure that fails any one of these layers should not carry a decision on its own.

Headline numbers travel a long way from the raw ledger to the press release, and something gets lost at every stop.
